Portland’s main trade is importing bespoke HDPE, LDPE, Paper Products, Cotton Bags, Non-Woven Poly-Prop Bags, used by a wide spectrum of customers from large Packaging Merchants, Multiple’s down to the smaller End User.

Portland Poly-Bag Supplies were established in 1973 in Nottingham and within two years the company moved to its first entirely commercial premises.

For three consecutive years the company increased its turnover by in excess of 100%, and had moved to larger premises and in 1977, the company became incorporated as Sashcastle Limited T/A Portland Poly-Bag Supplies.

In 1981 the company moved premises again into modern warehousing of 5,000 Sq. feet, with additional office space and covered the whole of the UK mainland.

Turnover had increased to £2,000,000+ with a customer base largely from within the independent food retail sector.

From the beginning of 1982, the recession began to have severe effects on the economy and it became apparent that the face of retailing would have to change dramatically. The company at this point started importing supplies directly from South East Asia and started to move away from the independent retailer towards Merchants, Wholesalers, Cash and Carry’s and Medium Sized Multiple Retailers.

In 1988 the company moved to Daleside Road in Colwick, a purpose built 23,000 Sq. feet warehouse with an additional 3,000 Sq. feet of office space.

Portland went from strength to strength covering the entire UK, as well as exporting particularly into Eire and it has established its customer base to include National Multiples as well as maintaining its traditional merchant base.

In August 2005, the business was sold to the Kendon Packaging Group PLC. All the staff, apart from 2 warehouse employees, moved to Bilborough, into the existing Kendon Packaging (Midland) building.

From there, we have continued to trade as Portland Poly-Bag Supplies, and although a subsidiary of Kendon Packaging PLC, Portland still source and import goods from the Far East themselves, with the factories being visited regularly by the managers of Portland.
